Caring for Your Satin

To avoid any accidents, always wash pieces of the same colour and the same fabric together, and never add an item with a zip to the same load.

Steer clear of abrasive or powder detergents, they wear down and dull the weave far faster. A small capful of fabric softener is welcome.

Set your machine between 30°C and 40°C, on a moderate spin (800 rpm is ideal).

How often should you wash? Around once a week is the sweet spot.

Drying

The simplest way is also the best one: let your washed satin air dry. Lay it flat or hang it over a line, give it a gentle shake first to smooth out the folds, and you'll find it dries surprisingly fast. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators, as too much heat can dull the sheen over time.

Devoted to your tumble-dryer? Use a low to moderate heat setting only, on a gentle cycle. Take your pieces out while they are still slightly damp and let them finish drying in the open air. This keeps the fabric smooth, limits creasing, and means far less ironing later.

A small habit that pays off: take your linens out as soon as the cycle ends rather than leaving them to sit. Smoothing or folding them while still warm keeps the surface even and your bed looking its best.

To Iron, or Not to Iron

Part of the charm of washed satin is its gently crumpled, lived-in look. So there is no need to reach for the iron unless you truly want to. Most mornings, a quick smooth of the hand is all your bed will ask for.

That said, if your idea of a perfect bed means a crisply finished set, set your iron to a low or medium temperature and let the steam do the work, gently relaxing the fibres rather than pressing them flat. Ironing your pieces while still slightly damp makes this even easier.

For extra care, work on the reverse side to protect the surface sheen, and avoid resting the hot plate in one spot. A handheld steamer does the job beautifully too, smoothing the fabric while it still hangs.
