Understanding silk.

Mulberry silk is a natural protein fibre spun by silkworms fed exclusively on mulberry leaves. That controlled diet produces longer, more uniform filaments than any other silk, which is why it is the standard for quality bedding. Chemically it is closer to your hair than to cotton, which is why it asks for a different kind of care.

Momme is the weight of silk fabric, the way thread count works for cotton. It is the single most useful number when comparing two silk pillowcases. Below 16 momme, silk is too light for something you sleep on and wash every few days. Our pillowcases are 19 momme, the standard weight for quality bedding. A listing that does not state its momme is telling you something.

Silk is a fibre. Satin is a weave, and it is almost always polyester. Both give a smooth, low-friction surface, but only silk breathes and adapts to your temperature through the night. A pillowcase can be satin without containing any silk at all, which is why the composition label is the only thing worth reading.

A smooth, low-friction surface lets hair glide rather than catch as you move at night. This may help limit friction-related tangles and frizz, although results vary by hair type and routine. A pillowcase supports a hair routine; it does not replace one, and it is not a treatment.

Many people with curls choose silk because its smooth surface reduces overnight rubbing, and because it draws far less moisture from the hair than cotton. Pair it with the routine and products suited to your own curl pattern.

Silk's smooth surface creates less drag than textured fabrics, which is why people notice fewer pillow creases in the morning. It does not treat acne, irritation or any other skin condition. Wash your bedding regularly and seek professional advice for medical concerns.

Silk is a natural fibre that moves moisture away from the skin and adapts to your temperature, which is why it suits both warm and cool sleepers. This is the clearest practical difference from polyester satin, which feels cool on contact but holds heat as the night goes on.

CARING FOR SILK.

Hand wash in cold water with a pH-neutral silk detergent, or use your machine's delicate cycle at 30°C maximum, in a mesh bag, on the lowest spin. Wash silk on its own a single zip or hook in the drum will pull the weave. Never wring: press the water out between two towels and air dry flat, away from direct sunlight.

A pH-neutral detergent made for silk or wool, with no enzymes, no bleach and no optical brighteners. Most standard detergents contain enzymes designed to break down protein stains — and silk is a protein. Never use fabric softener: it coats the fibre and takes away the sheen you paid for.

Pillowcases every three to four days, since they collect skin oils and hair products every night. Duvet covers and fitted sheets every one to two weeks.

No, at any temperature. Heat is what damages silk fastest. Air dry flat or over a line, always in the shade direct sunlight yellows silk and weakens the fibre permanently.

The three usual causes are fabric softener, hot water and tumble drying, and all three are irreversible. Cool water, a silk detergent and air drying in the shade keep the sheen for years.

Most creases fall out if you reshape the piece while it is still damp. For a crisp finish, iron inside out on the silk setting, 110°C maximum, while the fabric is slightly damp. A steamer held at a distance works just as well and touches nothing.

Wash it separately from anything with zips, hooks or velcro, and keep the mesh bag habit. Remove rings before handling and keep nails smooth. The floating threads that create the glide are also what catches.

Fold it clean and completely dry, flat in a drawer, away from light and damp. Avoid airtight plastic silk needs to breathe and do not compress it under heavy items for long periods.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRODUCT AND SIZE.

Check three things: the fibre composition, the momme, and the dimensions. A listing that states none of them is telling you something. Then measure your pillow side to side and top to bottom, without decorative edges and match it to the size given on the product page.

Our rectangular pillowcase is 75 x 50 cm, the UK and European standard, equivalent to a US Queen. Our square pillowcase is 50 x 50 cm, the European continental size for the decorative layer. Measure the pillow itself rather than your current pillowcase, which may have stretched.

Each set includes one duvet cover, one fitted sheet and two pillowcases in mulberry silk, cut from the same silk and dyed to the same tone so the whole bed matches in one order. Choose from ten colourways. Buying the set costs less than the pieces bought separately.

Measure the duvet itself rather than the mattress, then choose a cover with the same dimensions. If you are replacing an existing cover, its care label is the most reliable size reference.

Two per pillow you sleep on: one on the bed, one clean and ready. Silk pillowcases want washing every three to four days, and a rotation is the only way that actually happens.

Return shipping is arranged and paid by you, except when the item arrives damaged, defective or incorrect — in that case we cover everything and send a replacement or full refund. Once we receive your return, or proof of shipment, you are refunded within 14 days by the original payment method.
