Two Pearl White silk pillowcases stacked on a made bed against a wooden headboard

Silk Pillowcase for Skin: What It Does and What It Doesn't

You spend a third of your life with one side of your face pressed into fabric. Whatever that fabric is doing, it is doing it for seven hours a night, every night, for years.

If it is cotton, it is dragging, creasing and quietly absorbing the skincare you just paid for. A silk pillowcase changes that surface completely, and it is the easiest change you will ever make to a night routine.

The short answer

A silk pillowcase gives you a low-friction surface that lets your skin glide instead of crease. You wake with fewer pillow marks, less overnight tugging, and more of your night cream still on your face where you put it.

It takes no effort, no extra step, and no change to anything else you do. You put it on the bed and it works while you sleep.

Our silk pillowcases come in ten shades with free worldwide shipping. Most people start with two.

What actually changes, and what doesn't

Worth being precise, because this category is full of promises it cannot keep.

What changes What doesn't
Friction between your face and the fabric Anything happening under the skin
How deep sleep creases are in the morning Lines that come from age or sun
How much product stays on your face The product's own effectiveness
How clean a surface you sleep on Any medical or dermatological condition

A pillowcase is a surface. It removes one variable from your night: the drag of the fabric. That variable is real and it works on you every night, but it is one variable among many, and the honest version of this page says so.

Fewer sleep creases, every morning

Those lines you wake up with, always on the side you sleep on, have a name: sleep creases. They are folds pressed into the skin by hours of pressure and drag against a textured surface, and they are distinct from the lines that come with age. Sleep creases fade after you get up. That is how you tell them apart.

Cotton is a mesh of short fibres with a rough surface at the scale your skin experiences it. Turn over on cotton and your cheek catches. Turn over on silk and it slides.

Less grip means shallower creases, and creases that fade in minutes rather than lingering through your morning. It is the difference people notice first, usually within the first week.

What a silk pillowcase does not do is prevent ageing. Anyone telling you a fabric reverses wrinkles is selling you something a fabric cannot deliver.

Your skincare stays on your skin

Cotton is absorbent. That is a virtue in a towel and a problem in a pillowcase.

Every night, the serum, retinol, oil or moisturiser you applied before bed is partly wicked into your pillowcase instead of staying on your skin. If you use anything you consider an investment, part of it is going into your laundry.

Silk absorbs considerably less than cotton, so more of what you apply stays where you put it, for the full night. For anyone with a real evening routine, this alone justifies the switch: the pillowcase costs less than a single bottle of the product it stops wasting.

Less drag, night after night

Low friction means less mechanical stress on your face while you sleep. If your skin looks tired and roughed-up in the morning, taking seven hours of nightly drag out of the equation changes how it looks when you wake.

The same property that makes silk gentle on hair makes it gentle on skin. It is the reason people who switch for their hair keep the pillowcase for their face. If hair is what brought you here, silk vs cotton for curly hair covers that side.

To be clear about the limit: this is about friction and about sleeping on a clean surface. It is not a treatment for irritation, breakouts or any skin condition, and it does not replace advice from a professional.

It suits every skin type

Silk does not add anything to your skin and does not strip anything from it. It is a surface change, which means it suits dry, oily, combination and sensitive skin equally.

There is no ingredient to react to, no adjustment period, and nothing to patch test. You change the pillowcase, and that is the whole intervention.

What you're sleeping on

Since the fabric is the entire argument, it is worth stating what ours is.

Momme is the weight measure for silk, the way thread count is for cotton. Ours is 19 momme: heavy enough to survive being slept on and washed every few days for years, where lighter silk gives way at the seams.

Mulberry silk is silk from silkworms fed exclusively on mulberry leaves, which yields a longer and more uniform filament than wild silk. That is what makes the surface continuous rather than slubbed, and continuous is the whole point when it is against your face.

Every pillowcase is 100% mulberry silk, woven in silk certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (certificate 19.HCN.84688, issued by Hohenstein HTTI). The number is public and you can check it yourself on the OEKO-TEX label check tool. Each one closes with an invisible zip in the side seam, so nothing presses against your face.

Get the most from it

Wash every three to four days. A clean pillowcase is a better pillowcase, and half of what you are buying is a fresh surface. Our complete silk care guide has the method.

Own more than one. The routine only works if there is always a clean case ready. Two minimum, three if you wash weekly. We did the arithmetic in how many silk pillowcases you really need.

Skip fabric softener. It leaves a residue on the fabric that sits against your face all night, and it dulls the finish permanently.

Get the size right. A case that is too small strains at the seams and fails early; our size guide explains why 75x50 is UK standard and US Queen, not US Standard.

Match it to the bed. If you like what the pillowcase does, a full silk bedding set extends it to every surface your skin touches.

Frequently asked questions

Does a silk pillowcase help with wrinkles?

It reduces sleep creases, which are the temporary folds pressed into your face on the side you sleep on. That is not the same as the lines that come from age and sun exposure, and no fabric affects those. Expect smoother mornings and shallower marks, not a change to how your skin ages.

Is silk or satin better for skin?

Both give you a smooth, low-friction surface, and on that point satin genuinely delivers. Silk adds two things polyester satin cannot: it breathes, and it lasts. We set out the full comparison, including why we changed our own minds, in silk vs satin.

Will it help my night cream work better?

It stops your pillowcase competing with your skin for it. Silk absorbs considerably less than cotton, so more of what you apply stays on your face through the night. The product itself does the rest.

How long before I see a difference?

Sleep creases are usually noticeably reduced within the first few mornings, because the mechanism is immediate: less drag tonight, fewer marks tomorrow.

Does a silk pillowcase help with acne?

No, and we would rather say so. Breakouts have causes a fabric cannot reach. What a silk pillowcase offers is less friction and, if you wash it often, a clean surface to sleep on. We take that specific case apart, including why three pillowcases beat two, in silk for breakout-prone skin. Keep doing whatever your routine or your dermatologist already prescribes.

Which colour should I choose?

Every shade is the same fabric with the same finish, so choose on looks alone. Our ten colorways run from Obsidian Black to Pearl White, and silk pillowcase colors walks through all of them.

Start with two. One on the bed, one in the wash. Our silk pillowcases ship free worldwide, in ten shades, in 19 momme mulberry silk.

Your skincare is already doing the hard part. Stop letting your pillowcase absorb it.
